Sub-zero temps, forced air, fireplaces and low humidy season is upon us. If winter has you feeling and looking as parched as a fasting pickle, you're not alone. There are some tried and true skin fixes that will give your skin the hydration and moisture it is lacking and plump you right back up. The keys are to add humidity to the places where you spend the majority of your time and to make simple yet significant changes in your skin care routines and ingredients to help your skin adapt to the harsh environment.

I love old, vintage homes, especially the kind with the beautiful, clean, non-drying radiant heat. I'm not too mechanical and am not sure why we don't warm our homes this way any longer, but the truth is...most of us dwell and work in environments that continually blast us with dry, hot air. This is not doing our skin any favors. Cozying up to the fireplace is a true blessing of winter, but with the same drying effect on our skin. This last year, we added a whole house humidifier, because we do not live in a vintage home and our fireplace is well used...very well used. It really has made a difference. My youngest daughter has very low-lipid skin (bumpy, you can see her skin flake kind of skin). She is the baramoter of humidity in our home as it reflects greatly on the dryness of her skin and her overall comfort. Her skin is loving the whole house humidifier. It is certainly easier than filling, cleaning and refilling humidifiers in rooms too! You can even buy a humidifier for your car... for under $20....awesomesauce!

Lets talk about skin care. You will want to boost the exfoliation of your skin in the colder months. Skin is constantly renewing and shedding. Layers of dead skin accumulate. This does two things, impedes all those lovely moisturizing ingredients from entering your skin and doesn't allow your skin to "breathe" or take in moisture from the air. It only makes sense to remove that build up. (Your skin will look brighter and more radiant too..bonus!) Now is the time to schedule a deep exfoliation with your esthetician and perhaps a sugar or salt scrub for your whole body. Skin is an organ of elimination. Keeping it fresh and exfoliatied will enable it to more efficiantly get rid of toxins.

Add additional exfoliation for your face and body in your home-care routine will keep your skin soft and supple. Using a skin renewing alpha hydroxy cleanser every other day will boost exfoliation. My favorite body exfoliant is Buff, a combination of papaya enzymes and skin scrubbing jojoba beads. When showering, use a natural made soap. Most commercial soaps remove much of the glycerin (humectant) from the soap. Hand made natural soaps retain all this glycerin and often contain many moisturizing skin-loving oils. You will notice a big difference. Try not to linger too long in that hot shower, switch to cooler temperature for a bit before leaving and don't dry completely before applying your moisturizer. This also makes your hair smoother. A moisturizer with a good balance of fatty acids, ceramides and cholesterol will protect your skin's barrier. Humectants, such as hylauronic acid or algae applied in a serum before your moisturizer or added to your moisturizer will lock that moisture in. A skin oil, customized to your skin type will also help further lock in moisture. If your skin is prone to breakout, consult with your esthetician as to which oil is best for you. Some oils are comedongenic, but there are a few that dry, acneic skin will tolerate.

You can beat the winter skin blues and retain healthy glowing skin even in the coldest of months. If you have additional skin questions or wish to schedule a face and body exfoliation, contact us here! Happy New Year!

I have not posted lately...and for good reason - I have been spending much time researching skin care that is dear to my heart (and my skin/scalp)! Anyone that knows me well, knows that I am pretty "au naturelle" and somewhat of a minimalist. I have always sought out fragrance free, dye free, organic products for both professional facials and for the home care products that I recommend to maintain results of my clients. I have since become a soap maker!

I have always had somewhat sensitive skin, but this year I began experiencing dermatitis on my scalp. I tried many different types of shampoos, etc and it just would not clear up. Knowing that preservatives are often the culprits in allergic reactions to cosmetic products, I began experimenting with products that are preservative free. Any type of product formulated with water or liquid base, needs to have a preservative or else it will spoil; therefore, these products contain preservatives. That left only solids. My first project was a shampoo bar. A shampoo bar is similar to a soap and really any properly formulated soap can be used as a shampoo. I formulated a bar that has the lather that you would desire in a shampoo AND has the properties to clean and nourish the scalp MINUS the preservatives and other added chemicals. Scented with cloves it smells wonderful! The first week that I used it, my scalp drastically improved. No more itching and irritation. The only thing was that it left my skin not quite as shiny as shampoos that have all the additives. It also needed protection on the days that I wanted to use a flat iron. I found the perfect companion.....2/3 distilled water, 1/3 white vinegar and some essential oil (I have tried lavender, lemon and clove) in a spray mister. This does the job beautifully. It protects the hair and leaves it super shiny. I spray it after I towel try a bit. I'm sure your wondering about the smell of vinegar. It does not linger after the hair is dry and the essential oils do help.

This may not be for everyone, but I plan to stay preservative free. If you are experiencing sensitivites, this may be just the thing for you. You may also just want to live a cleaner lifestyle.

I finally have a use for all the organic flowers and herbs that my hubby and I are always growing on our farm!

Soaps and Shampoo's will be in the spa soon and available for online purchase. They are totally customized to your skin conditions. I'm so excited!!! More about facial soaps to come next time :)

Oh and the name was inspired by this little one!!! Who also is "blessed" with super sensitive skin and adds so much joy to our lives.

Time has gotten away from me...Thinking back over the last couple of weeks...
To recap...My husband is happy that I no longer snore (at all!!!) I don't think that I did regularly (we debate about that :) I think that the weight loss and the fact that I have been avoiding dairy have both contributed. About the dairy....I also no longer have headaches. I have had chronic headaches for as long as I can remember. A Dr. once told me that I needed to have sinus surgery. I never did because I heard that it was no fun at all!!!! Thankful that the headaches are GONE. I honestly only have had one in the last 40 days... That is a big difference for me! It has really got me thinking how much I want to incorporate many elements of the candida diet in my meals from now forward. Another happy fact, just today I took down a pair of the jeans from my closet, dusted off the cobwebs and slid easily into a size 8! That is 2 sizes down now!!! I really am amazed just how effective the whole Mlis program has been. The food choices, nutritional supplements, detox elements, body wraps and lymphatic drainage massage have all worked together in an awesome way...

Coming clean: Ok, I have to admit that I briefly fell off the wagon last week and had a piece of apple pie that I had in the freezer saved for my daughter's boyfriend who couldn't be with us at Thanksgiving. It was yummy! I got right back on the horse the next morning :)

I also was a bit lax about the excercise early on. The weight loss has really motivated me though, and I am now doing a pilates video and 30 minutes on the
treadmill each day. The video is excellent! It combines stretching, pilates, breathing and scripture verses. It is just perfect! Sophie is having fun trying to do the pilates with me. She loves it! She also loves throwing her small stuffed animals on the treadmill and watching them fly off :) Working out at home is the best for me right now. Sara Olsen has an awesome studio and is really excellent, if you like the accountability of a trainer and/or group workouts! sarasfitnessbydesign.com

So these last final days I am doing the final detox cleanse, body wrap and massage (YES!) Thanks for hanging with me through this journey. I have learned so much, am feeling stronger, healthier and can't wait to shop for my Mother-of-the-groom dress! We will do one last post with our "after" pictures next week :)

If this is something that interests you, I would encourage you to schedule a free consultation. The Mlis program offers weight loss, candida, and also many specialized programs that have helped many with other issues such as celiacs, autoimmune disorders, child candida, ADD, high blood pressure, fibromyalgia and more. You have nothing to loose and EVERYTHING to gain!

Blessings and Good Health!

Well we survived the Thanksgiving holidays....yes, two weekends of tempting foods in a row for us! We visited my husbands parents in Kentucky and it took a little prep....What is it about going on a trip??? Like emotional eating, we seem to have our favorite food and Starbucks drinks on speed-dial when we enter the vehicle and head down the road! I packed some nuts, brown rice cakes and almond butter and that got me there six hours later pretty happy.

I had not planned to weigh in until the end of the 45 days, but my Mother-in-Law had a scale in the bathroom and I couldn't resist.... 12 lbs down!!! Aubrey texted me later and said that was exactly what she had lost too. I had packed all my herbal supplements for each day but forgot to pack the slender-aid. Slender-aid I found out has been a BIG help in the program. It is a blend of 11 herbs that substantially decrease the appetite. In addition this particular blend works together to assist the breakdown of fat around the heart and other vital organs. I really could tell a difference. I did crave sugar and carbs more.

My closet is a mix of "now" clothes and "then" clothes. I had the happy occasion of retiring my only pair of "now" jeans :) Off to the store I went to purchase a couple of pairs of pants in my new size!! That was a great feeling! I'm sure my "then clothes" are pretty outdated by now and will be making a trip to the Salvation Army at some point. (I'm kind of a horder with clothes)

December 20th is the finish line..It is getting closer. We have one more 3 day detox period at the end of next week. Energy levels are still good, waning a bit from all the holiday activities, but all-in-all feeling super good. This week I plan to get out the pilates video and get to work on that. Toning and core strength and flexibility are all needed! My brother's in law put together my far-infa red sauna that had been sitting in the corner of the basement! I'm excited to incorporate that. It is a great way to further the detox and is relaxing as well. I am super excited as I have purchased an infa-red sauna blanket for the spa as well. It will be a great addition to a body wrap and especially for those going through the Mlis weight-loss program.

I just scheduled a massage for this Friday too. Yeah! It is going to be 90 minutes too. I have never had a massage that length...HEAVEN!

I've been researching how to bake with healthier grains...oat flour, brown rice, etc. More about that later. I forgot to mention that my hair and nails are growing like crazy. I'm sure that is the work of the supplements too. I will need to be seeing my stylist Sally who has a shop in my office suit! She is awesome...expecting her first baby too. How fun to experience that.

Have a wonderful week!

This week has really gone by fast! First Detox period is over. Aubrey and I both received our body wrap this week as well. I'll kind of walk you through what that is like.

First - body is exfoliated with "buff" this is a physical and enzyme exfoliant. Tiny ground pumice and papaya work together to loosen dead skin cells and prepare the body to absorb the niacin cream. Next the niacin cream is applied, followed by the wrap. The wrap is a saran type wrap that is wrapped in a specific way to contour the body and stimulate the lymphatic system. It is left on a total of 1 hour. We were warm and comfortable, but not hot while in the wrap. The idea is for the niacin to be absorbed into the body, not sweated out! It is important to drink lots of water after the wrap to eliminate toxins. When the wrap was removed, I felt so great, really calm and rested. Aubrey did receive her massage, but my schedule did not allow me to this week. I have it to look forward to next week! We will continue to apply the body exfoliant and maintain (home care of niacin) to maximize the results of the wrap.

Thanksgiving!!! It was wonderful to have many of my family in from Michigan this week/weekend! My brothers in law and Russ had their own little "deer camp" and our home was camp! My Mom, three Sisters, my daughters and cousins all had a wonderful time cooking and visiting! We had our "feast" Saturday. We literally cooked from sunrise until about 4:00pm that day! EVERYTHING from scratch, down to the roasting of a pumpkin from our garden for the pie! I didn't get to eat that, but the word was that it was the best pie ever!!! We had all the traditional food, but I had spent time earlier gathering and experimenting with recipes so that those of us (three) who are doing the candida/weight loss diet could have a great meal as well....and it WAS!

I did find that I needed to send home the coconut cream pie, Mom's real stuffing, homemade pumpkin pie, Apple pie, and cheesecakes home with the kids!!! They were happy to get it and I didn't want it in the house!!!!

We all sat around the fireplace in the living room and told what we were thankful for this year. Our Faith in God, Family, Friends topped the list. I am also truly thankful to be regaining my health!!!

Aubrey is also getting creative in the kitchen. She concocted a delicious shake of coconut milk, almond butter and cinnamon!!! We will be enjoying this all week!!!

This has been a good week! Energy level has been pretty high. The beginning of the week, we noticed that our first 3 day detox in the program would fall over our Thanksgiving, which we are celebrating the 21st. That would not do!!! We made a minor adjustment and decided to do the detox a bit early. The detox looks like this:

Eat only veggies for two days to prep for detox. During this time we began taking the DETOX herbal capsules, CLEANSE and FIBER. On the first day of the detox, we used our Mlis bottle (32 oz) and filled it with juice of three lemons (Several years ago I purchased an electric juicer :)...this is awesome! Add to the lemons pure maple syrup and distilled water. The bottle is conveniently marked with fill lines. This was our "food for 3 days" Truth is we felt so good that we went an extra day. The mixture provided all the vitamins/nutrients and glucose that our bodies needed and amazingly we felt great. I think it tastes like a lemon shake up from the fair...Aubrey is not so sure. We also continued the Detox herbal capsules during this time. It was a nice break from all the other supplements!!!!! Distilled water works as a magnet, attracting unused, discarded and rejected minerals from our bodies, the blood and lymph help and they are eliminated. The detox period is the only time distilled water is used. Filtered water is used all other times.

Our body wrap and massage is tomorrow!!! I have been looking forward to this...kind of a reward. I'll tell you more about that in the next post :)

Early in the week, before we started detox, I took the time (rather tedious) to empty my supplements into a glass and "drink" instead of swallowing. I would NOT recommend this...didn't taste too well at all!

Noticable results??? My belly is shrinking YEAH!!!! Face looks not quite so round, Aubrey's too...clothes are feeling looser. I am not a scale person and do not plan to weigh in until the end. I did weigh before we started.

Cravings? I did crave dessert of any kind this week!!! Aubrey misses coffee the most. Oh and we discovered that Costco has a wonderful tabouli which we ate early in the week in salad....SUPER YUMMY!!!!!!!

I am cooking for 20 plus for our Thanksgiving. My Sister and Brother in law just returned from seeing a specialist in Colorado for auto immune disorders. He specializes in this, even has worked for NASA. He has put them on an anti-inflammatory diet that is very similar to the Mlis program. It will make cooking even more fun if others will be eating our special "menu" ...I'll let you know what we had next post...I can't wait!!!

Have a great day/evening and always and many, many blessings to you!

Looking back over my journal entries for the week: Day 1-3 felt really good. No real hunger cravings. (It helped that I had eliminated sugar/carbs/caffine the few days before starting. Both Aubrey and I did notice that we "peed" a LOT! Drinking lots of water and hot water with lemon throughout the day and in the AM/PM to swallow the nutrient supplements, which I will say has been the most difficult thing to get used to. I kept thinking about all those who because of health problems, have to take lots of med's daily...The supplements are only temporary, during the program. .I would rather work on staying healthy now and AVOID being a pill popper later on! Diet day 1 and 2 consisted of mostly salads and the meal replacement (chocolate is delicious!!!!) I found this to be really convenient at work and sometimes for breakfast when in a hurry. I got a little creative on day 3 when craving "real food" I made a concoction of chicken, garlic, roma tomatoes, shredded carrots and onions on the top of the stove for dinner. It was really great!

Day 4-7 Day four I was feeling a bit tired, but noticed as I climbed the stairs my joint (knee) didn't ache as it usually does!!! Yeah I had some extra time today so google found me a great recipe to make (I even served it to my lovely daughter Amanda and her boyfriend Phil who were here visiting from Rockford) Quinoa meatloaf and mashed cauliflower. I used turkey for us and did make one with beef as my hubby is NOT a ground turkey fan. I took a detox bath during this time and continued to use the buff, body exfoliant and maintain detoxifying cream. I love the smell of the maintain!!!! It really makes sense to me to keep your body well exfoliated well. Our skin is the largest elimination organ of our body!!!

We had a family birthday party for my son Alec at Alexander's steakhouse. I had a bit of Salmon and salad bar. Olive oil with a sqeeze of lemon is our new salad dressing...Really simple and good! It felt great to leave there not groggy with overeating...pretty sure that's a first for me there!!! I even made our homemade traditional birthday cake (jello cake) I really did want to eat that, but it felt good to make it for my family. Sophie's birthday is in December and I will have some then :)

I also took several walks outside in the sunshine this week! I have a new treadmill waiting for me in our basement that I got our family for and early Christmas gift. There won't be too many beautiful fall days like this and I wanted to soak in that vitamin D and take in the beauty of the fall color and hay bales in the fields surrounding our home. Life is Good, God is Great!glo facial spa & skin centerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17162343043068761981noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7131149690043857009.post-73103578738563860462013-11-03T20:53:00.000-08:002013-11-03T20:53:37.113-08:00

Let the Journey Begin!

Week 1 in a candida/weight loss/detox program

Why such a long name? Wouldn't a simple detox be enough to begin a weight loss program? What is candida anyway?

Our goal was to increase our health, lose inches and keep it that way!

Following the Mlis wellness lifestyle system (They have been around over 20 plus years and have the case-studies to back up their program) It is recommended to do a candida screening first before beginning a weight-loss program. This is because of our American diet (large portions, small nutrition) combined with antibiotic usage and often birth control leaves the majority of us with many symptoms of candida or yeast/fungus overgrowth in our bodies.

After completing the candida evaluation form, we had many of the symptoms and just decided to take care of that first. It is often difficult to achieve weight/inch loss with a candida overgrowth, so it just makes sense to us! Since weight/inch loss is also a goal, we will be combining the weight loss program at the same time and so to say, killing two birds (or fat cells) with one stone (program).

This is a 45 day program (yes we still WILL be participating in Thanksgiving, just a slightly modified feast!)

So now comes the humbling part....The before pictures. I seriously thought about putting my photoshop skills to use and replacing my lovely, more fit daughter Aubrey's body shots with my face, vice versa...you get the picture....Since we work together on a daily basis, I didn't think it was a good idea :)

We also took close up pictures of our faces, as I expect skin to improve as well!

Especially areas of breakouts that sugar is largely responsible for. (I'll post before/after picture at the end of the program)

Here is what the next two days will be like: Fruits and vegetables only, removing caffine and sugar/carbs now will lessen the body's shock and unpleasant symptoms such as headaches if done before the detox period begins. Stopping meat and eating fruits and veggies only gets our bodies ready for the detox that will begin on day three. I'll post more in a few days! Wish us luck!

When Choosing a Sunscreen, Be Smart, Think Physical

There is a huge difference between physical and chemical sunscreens. Chemical sunscreens absorb UVA UVB, which causes more of a heat reaction, which increases tissue inflammation and makes your skin more susceptible to damage. You will often see more dark spots, sun freckles, wrinkles, and fine lines because inflammation stresses your skin and reduces immunity activity.

Physical Sunscreens are reflective; Titanium dioxide and Zinc oxide are reflectors so light may bounce off the skin. This is the best protection for skin, to maintain a cooler skin reaction. Physical sunscreens reduce skin stress and potentially minimizes the long term effects of sun damage.

Look on the shelf, you will notice the higher the SPF sunscreen the more chemicals you will see. Check out some of the chemical sunscreen ingredients below. Don’t forget to look at your active ingredients with the drug facts. Chemical sunscreens may not be the solution for your summer fun.

Let's focus on a few tips to keep your skin healthy during your Summer fun.

New Sunscreen labeling - Are you a bit confused about the new labeling in sunscreen? It's actually going to make you safer in the sun. In the past, a product (sunscreen or moisturizer with sunscreen included) could be labeled broad spectrum and in fact only give you UVB protection which left you in doubt of the level of UVA protection. UVA rays can contribute to skin cancer and aging of the skin. Yes, those UVA (aging) rays can make us look older before our time! Under new FDA guidelines a product can only be labeled "broad spectrum" if the UVA protection is equal to UVB. This makes it easier for you to know the level of protection that you really have.

How much protection do I need? As an esthetician, my recommendation is a SPF of 30. It is also important to seek your esthetician's advise of which form of sunscreen is best for your skin type and conditions. For example someone with acne or rosaccea will benefit most from using a mineral (zinc oxide/titanium dioxide) natural formulation. This is also very easy to apply. My favorite is Eminence Organics sun defense. This also has the benefit of lasting longer than organic types of sunscreen. At the very least, use a light weight product that will not clog your pores. Note - just because a label reads "non-comedongenic" doesn't necessarily mean that there are not pore clogging ingredients in the formulation. If you have dry skin, you will benefit from a more emollient sun protection product. Remember the sun is most intense from 10am-4pm. Some sun rays DO penetrate through glass, so you need protection always during the day. I see many clients with hyperpigmentation spots on the "drivers side of their face." Re-apply sunscreen throughout the day as no sunscreen is completely waterproof, only water resistant. New labeling will tell you how often you need to re-apply. Find a formulation that is easy to carry with you and re-apply easily.

Sun protection and pigmentation issues: If you are prone to pigmentation (sunspots) The addition of a tyrosinase inhibitor (the enzyme that causes excess melanin production) is also a great way to help keep your skin tone even. This in addition to or included in your sunscreen is the best line of defense for keeping your skin young looking! Regular monthly lactic acid peels can slough off excess skin and keep your skin hydrated, even toned and even helps regulate pigmentation. Save the intense skin resurfacing for fall/winter months if you are a sun lover! Retin A users need to be especially diligent about sun protection as their skin will be more sensitive. Feeding your skin with antioxidants inside and out also helps regulate melanin and fight free radicals that cause aging!

Permanent cosmetic lip and brow enhancements should also be protected with spf of 30 to prevent premature fading of color.

Now ready, set, go have some SUMMERTIME FUN!
Most of us happily over indulge and are left feeling a little toxic and ready to once again reclaim our health come January. Body wraps are always a popular service this time of year.

You may have seen images of shivering, "mummified" women draped in plastic, stiffly walking on a treadmill trying to quickly loose a few inches. This can be one way to loose some water weight, but certainly not my idea of relaxation. In fact for some, vigorous exercise while in a compression wrap can be dangerous. I recall one episode of "Frasier" where Niles is similarly wrapped up and lounges on a chair after having gained entry into the prestigious gold member section of an exclusive Seattle spa....don't think he needs the inch loss. Come with me and I'll take you on a journey that not only benefits your skin, but also your entire being. At glo facial spa, the focus is on detoxification, hydration and relaxation.

Your body wrap treatment begins with a consultation. This is important as each wrap is customized to your specific needs. You may be concerned with an area of cellulite. You may have be experiencing eczema or breakouts which are common on the back area. Type of exfoliation, body masques and wrapping techniques are each determined to give you the best results possible for your skin conditions.

Your wrap has been designed and your experience begins. You begin fully draped on our super soft heated massage bed. Your skin will be exfoliated with a body brush, sugar/salt scrub, or enzyme, depending on your skin type. You may elect to include a far infared sauna session to begin the detoxification process and open up your pores. Nature sounds wash away your cares as you begin to relax. You will return to the heated massage table and your purifying body masque will be applied along with cellulite fighting ingredients. Kaolin clay draws out impurities, while sea algae hydrates and infuses minerals into your skin. You are then cocooned and wrapped in special layers that will further the detox process and hold in your body heat. You will deeply destress as you experience a swedish and accupressure facial massage. Your scalp massage will be blissfully relaxing and stimulate hair growth using accupressure and indian head massage techniques. Finally, a cool antioxidant eye compress is applied to reduce swelling and fluid retention in the eye area. Your wrap will be removed with warm herbal infused towels and your skin will feel buttery soft after being massaged with a customized organic moisturizer. You may loose a few inches, but remember it is usually water weight and no substitute for eating healthy and exercise. It is nice for a special occasion though. Remember the real goal is to detoxify, hydrate and relax.

Use a body wrap or series to jump start your new years resolution to get healthy! We're usually so much more successful if we reward ourselves along the way. You will love how you look and most of all how you feel! I'm doing this myself, feeling wonderful and looking forward to a few days in Mexico with my daughters in January.

Wishing you a Merry Christmas, God's blessings and skin health in the new year!
In fact, the solution used at glo facial spa contains ingredients that will firm and hydrate your skin! Just how does it work? A natural sugar derived from sugar cane reacts with amino acids in your skin causing oxidation and natural browning. The best way to get the most even results is to hand apply (airbrush) the DHA solution on to skin that has been prepared to absorb it.

Skin prep - at least 24 hours before your appointment, use a salt or sugar scrub to exfoliate or schedule a whole body exfoliation. Wash only with a body wash that is ph balanced. (We carry an excellent line of pre-and post tan products that are reasonably priced at glo) If it doesn't sting your eyes....it will work. Be sure not to apply any moisturizers to your skin the day of your tan.

Tan day - Remember, no moisturizers and only ph balanced wash! Come wearing loose fitting dark clothing. We will apply a bronzer with the sugar solution that may get on clothing (don't worry, it comes off in the wash) Avoid water or sweating for at least 6 hours. Your first shower should be with water only. The bronzer will come off in the shower and in a few hours your natural tan will emerge.

Post Tan - Your next shower can be with ph balanced body wash, not exfoliants. Be sure to start moisturizing your skin day and night with a good moisturizer or one with tan extendors. Remember to wear spf if you are outside, airbrush tanning solution does not contain spf and you may burn in the sun.
Your tan will last 5-7 days and up to 10 with the tan extender...Enjoy your tan!glo facial spa & skin centerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17162343043068761981noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7131149690043857009.post-22239313094599599302011-09-05T22:23:00.000-07:002018-08-28T09:16:11.497-07:00"In the Clear"Ah, the changing of the seasons, it is an exciting, invigorating time no doubt. Fall is the time when we are often filled with a new vigor to clean out those closets, get organized, and get back on track and on schedule. A fresh new start…what about your skin? Some acne may have been lulled into hibernation with the summer sun, only to return with a vengeance ready to wreak havoc on your skin and your confidence. Other acne sufferers were afforded no such reprieve and truly feel that they have tried everything under that sun and still their acne persists. This article address the three T’s of acne control: Understanding Triggers, Knowing Treatment options, Teamwork the key to success. When all these are implemented, you can be on the path to clear skin once and for all!

Understanding acne TRIGGERS – Acne is a disease that has no known cure at this time. It is believed to be hereditary. Acne lesions begin with hyperkeratosis. This is simply when, for some unknown reason, keratin loaded skin cells increase at an abnormally rapid rate in a follicle. These dead skin cells clump together. In a normal follicle the hair acts as a wick to get the oil that is produces by the sebaceous glands to the surface. When a follicle is compacted with these dead skin cells, combined with bacteria and oil, the oil flow to the skin is reduced and an acne lesion begins to form. The baby lesion or microcomedone can take different paths and develop into either a non- inflamed or inflamed acne lesion. Known acne triggers include stress, hormones, excessive iodine, androgen based birth control, pore clogging ingredients in skin care, even fabric softener that we use in our dryer and more. The hormone testosterone is increased when we are under stress or taking some forms of birth control. Testosterone stimulates our sebaceous glands, producing more sebum or oil which further crowds the follicle already crowded with extra layers of skin.

Know Your TREATMENT Options –An esthetician who specializes in acne treatment is your best defense. Knowing which type of acne you have is important as non- inflamed and inflamed acne are treated differently. In cases where there is a combination, the inflamed acne is controlled first and then the non -inflamed lesions are treated. The best ingredients for topical treatments are: alpha and beta hydroxy acids such as mandelic, glycolic acids, salicylic acid, retinoids and oxygenating ingredient to exfoliate the follicle and kill bacteria on the surface of the skin. Ingredients that will fade dark spots (post inflammatory hyperpigmentation) from acne lesions are also important. Skin treatments with an acne specialist will speed up clearing of your skin. Professional extractions and peels combined with calming and hydrating ingredients and technology to keep your skin’s lipid barrier healthy are important to ensure your overall results and work synergistically with your homecare.

TEAMWORK, Your Key to Success - Let’s face it, you can have all the best information or tools but if you don’t know how to use it, it’s not going to work. That about sums up the frustration so many feel about past acne treatments. The true key to success is to find an acne specialist who will take the time to determine your type of acne, acne triggers in your life, and develop a game plan for you. An acne specialist will track your progress and change your homecare as your skin adapts to the ingredients, because it can. Acne treatment ingredients should be started slowly with an overall plan in mind. A good esthetician who specializes in acne treatment will take photos and track your progress along the way. The end result is to not only get clear, but to stay clear!
